Pistachio Coffee

Pistachio Coffee

Have you ever heard of Pistachio Coffee?

This was the first time I have heard of Pistachio Coffee and the first time I tasted it at L' Avenue restaurant in Laval.

What is Pistachio Coffee?

Pistachio Coffee is a coffee that is creamy, decadent, sweet and yes there are pistachios in it and around the glass as well. There are 2 versions of this coffee. One is made with Milk, condensed milk, and pistachio coffee. There is another version made with the green pistachio paste all around the glass and creamy coffee poured into it. My version was the one with the milk. There are also more versions of this coffee. There is a vegan version with almond or oat milk or any other non-dairy milk, Latte, and cappuccino. By googling it I saw some versions where the coffee seems to be stronger and in others creamier. My Coffee was very creamy and rich. I felt the pistachios aroma more on the outside. It had a nitty taste to it.

This was a unique experience. I never had this style of coffee. I find this type of drink original. I also discovered that Starbucks also has a version of this Coffee.  Read below the story of how Starbucks came with this type of Coffee.

The origin of this Coffee

This Coffee was a prototype of Starbucks Coffee. The chain launched and marketed a high-calorie version for its 2021 menu. This beverage is a prototype from an earlier pistachio latte protype which was created in 2019 launch of its Chicago Reserve roastery.

Starbucks had success with another coffee drink version called hazelnut flavored beverage. They decided to look to Italian Cuisine for inspiration. They opted for pistachio because it was a popular liked ingredient already used in Italian cuisine like pastries. Furthermore, Scilly is known for top quality pistachios. The interesting part is that the Mediterranean cuisine also uses pistachios.

Did Starbucks invent this drink? Not quite. According to a blogger I read on google called Ana Pipunic it is served hot and made from roasted and grounded terebinth flowers that are sourced from a subtype of pistachio tree. However, there are cold versions of this coffee as well.

There is still debate about the fact that Starbucks invented this drink or not. By doing my research some argue that this type of coffee was already served in smaller coffee shops. There is also a debate if it is from Mediterranean origin.

What do you think? Is it originally from Italy or Mediterranean? Did Starbucks really invent this version of Coffee? Mystery to be unfolded.

A bit about the Restaurant

This restaurant is here since 1994. The restaurant serves breakfast and brunch. It distinguishes itself with eccentric plates and generous portions, festive atmosphere and outstanding service. L'Avenue is more than just a culinary experience. The decor is very unique in the sense that it is very artistic with art painted walls. The plates are well organized and look orderly. Their menu is very unique. When I visited I ate eggs with pancakes, some beet salad and barbecued smoked beef brisket that was super tender and delicious. I never seen a dish like this anywhere else.
